Itinerary
We’ll spend four full days on guided excursions, exploring a fascinating mix of castles, ancient sites, and renowned distilleries alongside our private guide from Rabbie’s Tours. Traveling through the heart of Aberdeenshire, we’ll pass through the breathtaking Cairngorms National Park, taking in its wide-open landscapes, rugged hills, forests, and winding rivers—one of Scotland’s most magical and unspoiled regions.
On Saturday, September 4, we’ll experience the world-famous Braemar Gathering, a highlight of the Scottish cultural calendar. This iconic Highland Games celebration features traditional athletic competitions, stirring pipe band performances, Highland dancing, and classic Scottish food, all set against a spectacular Highland backdrop.
Two days of the itinerary are left free for you to enjoy at your own pace. Spend time unwinding at the spa, strolling through the gardens, walking nearby trails or into the village, or simply relaxing with a book and a view. For those looking for something more active, optional excursions such as golfing on local courses or fishing can be arranged on one of the free days.
Castles
With more than 260 castles, stately homes, and ancient ruins, Aberdeenshire proudly earns its nickname as Scotland’s Castle Country. In fact, it boasts more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK, making it a dream destination for history lovers and photographers alike. From dramatic cliff-top fortresses to fairytale towers tucked into rolling countryside, castles are everywhere you look—and we’ll visit as many as time allows.
Our journey may include iconic landmarks such as Balmoral Castle, the beloved Highland retreat of the Royal Family; the striking ruins of Dunnottar Castle, perched high above the North Sea; and beautifully preserved estates like Castle Fraser and Fyvie Castle. We’ll also seek out storybook favorites like Craigievar Castle, famous for its pink-hued turrets and picture-perfect setting. Each stop offers a glimpse into Scotland’s rich past, filled with legends, clan histories, and unforgettable scenery.
Ancient sites
Just outside the village of Tarland lies Tomnaverie Stone Circle, a beautifully preserved example of a Bronze Age recumbent stone circle dating back over 4,000 years. Set on a low hill with sweeping views across the Howe of Cromar and towards Lochnagar, this atmospheric site offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient rituals and early astronomical practices. Thought to have been used for ceremonial or observational purposes, the circle’s unique structure features a large horizontal stone flanked by two upright stones making it distinctive to this region of Scotland. We’ll visit this and other ancient and historical sites as time permits on our daily excursions.
Local Cuisine
Each morning will begin with a hearty full Scottish breakfast, featuring a generous spread of classic favorites to fuel the day’s adventures. As we travel through the region, we’ll stop to enjoy traditional pub fare, offering a taste of Scotland’s comforting, time-honored dishes in welcoming local settings. For five evenings, the award-winning Head Chef at Dounside House will treat us to an authentic Scottish dining experience. Thoughtfully designed menus will highlight the very best of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, with much of the produce harvested directly from the estate’s own gardens. These refined yet rustic dinners celebrate regional flavors, culinary heritage, and modern Scottish cuisine at its finest. On two evenings, we’ll venture into the surrounding countryside to dine at carefully selected local restaurants, allowing us to experience the diverse flavors and character of the area.
On one special day, we’ll enjoy a tasting luncheon featuring an artisanal selection of local cheeses, freshly baked breads, and cured game, thoughtfully paired with wines chosen by the on-site sommelier. This relaxed yet elegant experience offers a deeper appreciation of Scotland’s regional food traditions and expertly matched wines.
